Turkish Roman: Double Your Fun! Two specialized Turkish Roman ("Gypsy") dance classes. The first segment will cater to beginners in this style. More fundamental breakdown of rhythm and technique will be included, and student will familiarize themselves with the flair and feeling of this expressive folk dance. Next, ramp it up a couple of notches for more complex foot patterns and layering. The second segment will be for those who are already comfortable with the basics of this style, or who are willing for an initiation by fire! Really dance the dance and feel the joy that comes with getting to fly within this dance form.
** Please wear yoga or similar pants (so we can focs on the legs and feet), a simple, counless hip sash and a comfortable top. A notebook is also recommended.
***An educational music file and handout will be made available for students
Upper Egyptian Fusion: The more you know, the more confidently you will express your unique "voice" in dance. Upper Egyptian dance is the root of modern belly dance. We will look broadly at the key elements including Ghawazee dance, the Mahmoud Reda Troupe style, then intengrate traditional folkloric movement with modern elements. Playing with concepts of fusion will be a key element. The workshop is sure to braoden your repertoire and give you the chance to add more earthy spice to your dance.
Free Your Feet! And use the space! This workshop was made with the stand-in-place dancer in mind. We will spend time with technique and layer it on top of fun traveling steps and spins. Using choice Egyptian steps, a few Western basics and some fun old Bal Anat stuff thrown in, we'll get moving around the room. All will then be practiced in short combinations.
Riding the Music: This workshop is for any dancer wishing to approach improvisation and/or choreography with greater skill and awarenesss. Some concepts explored include the use of space and levels, movement qualitites and dynamics, taksim, arc and song mapping. All levels are welcome, but a willingness to improvise is a must!
**Please bring a yoga mat, a silent hip scarf, at notebook, and a pen.
Burlesque Fusion: Add a little Boom-Boom and a dash of Hot-cha to your step! Intelligent fusion comes from critical choices and well-rounded knowledge yes but it also is born out of playfulness!
From the big, bad world of Burlesque and Cabaret (the old European kind, not the sequined belly dance costume kind) we will explore jazz, cancan, group formations, and more for some saucy, sexy dancing. We will work with short combinations and students will also have the chance to explore fusion concepts on their own. Come play with some new moves and discover your inner Roxie.
